MLB
Big East Tournament kicks off

The Big East Tournament kicks off this week, and regular season champions Syracuse are still the number one pick. Syracuse's size continues to prove too much for opponents, and their style of play continues to impress. The Panthers have a tough tournament ahead of them - they'll most likely end up facing Notre Dame and either West Virginia or Louisville to get to the final, and any of those matchups could spell disaster for Pittsburgh. The Panthers have the game to grit their teeth and tough it out and come out on top. First in the conference in scoring defense and third in field goal percentage defense, the Panthers have the offense to win it all, but sports book cappers know that how their path unfolds will determine their success. Oddsmakers are also keeping a close eye on Lousiville. While the Cardinals were the no. 1 seed last year, Louisville will have to win four games in four days to make it two in a row.

In off-the-court College Basketball happenings, it is being reported that some conferences have discontinued the practice of giving gift packages for teams that make the conference and NCAA tournaments. The Big Ten, MAC, and Pac-10 have taken the cost cutting measure in an effort to reduce overall spending - an effort that could reduce budgets by as much as hundreds of thousands of dollars annually. Teams aren't the only ones that will no longer be receiving free swag - the move includes a halt to gift packages for VIP and media (why the media is even accepting gifts, I have no idea).

Olympic Men’s Ice Hockey: Gold Medal Game

The Olympic hockey odds have Team Russia and Team Canada in the Olympic men’s ice hockey gold medal game. The Canadians are 9 to 5 favorites to win the gold and the Russians are 11 to 4 favorites to be there as well. But Team Canada needed a shoot-out to beat Switzerland and then got beaten by the Americans. With their goaltending in question, Canada will not be playing in the gold medal game.

Sweden is a 5 to 1 favorite to win gold, but they lack the toughness needed to win in a championship game. They hammered their way to a win over Finland in the preliminary round, and the Fins are a talented team, but Finland cannot compare to a beating by the Russians or the Americans.

Team USA is a 7 to 2 favorite to win the gold, but those odds will change as the tournament progresses. Team USA is a gritty bunch of defensemen and a talented corps of forwards backed up by one of the best goalies in the world in Ryan Miller. The key to the Americans’ success is that you never know who will score, and you never know how they will do it.

The gold medal game for the 2010 Olympic men’s ice hockey tournament will be one of the best gold medal games played in a long time. It will be better than the Team USA versus Canada match-up in 2002 or the Finland versus Sweden game in 2006. It will pit the speed and toughness of Russians Alexander Ovechkin and Alexander Semin against the tough defensive play of Americans Jack Johnson and Brooks Orpick. It will be an epic goaltending battle between the two best goalies in the world; Ryan Miller and Evgeni Nabokov. It will be a hockey game that no hockey fan in the world will want to miss.

Pick: Team USA versus Team Russia

NCAA Championship Pick
Alright it’s only mid-February, but there are some pretty good indications on who will be the number 1 seeds, and who is the best team in college. Many keep refusing to believe in them due to their youth, but we may have a Carmelo Anthony type situation here with a one and done leading his team to the title. That man is John Wall, and that team is the Kentucky Wildcats.

Bookmaker Review: Kentucky Wildcats 24-1, 9-1 1st in SEC #2 National Ranking

Coach John Calipari is in his first year at Kentucky and unlike his predecessors, has produced in a way reminiscent of Kentucky tradition. Coach Cal has become the man to play for if you are a top point guard in this country. With Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans and now John Wall all playing for him in the last few years, Rose was a #1 overall pick and Evans was #2.

Wall is the consensus number #1 pick by experts this year and has averaged 17 points, 6.4 assists and 3.8 rebounds a game for the Wildcats as a freshman and has dazzled with slick passes and acrobatic drives to the lane and an ability to take over in crunch time.

Freshmen G Eric Bledsoe and F DeMarcus Cousins are also key players on this Wildcats squad. Cousins has been an absolute beast this season with a huge athletic frame with a decent low post repertoire even as a freshman. He’s averaging 15.9 points and 10.2 boards a game. The sky is the limit with him and he will likely be a top 7 pick in the draft. Bledsoe plays the same position as Wall and may stay for another season, but he too is unstoppable at times at the guard position. Junior Forward Patrick Patterson is the lone hold over from the Billy Gillespe days and has produced for Coach Calipari. Patterson has worked on his shot this past year and has added some range to an already impressive post game and tenacious rebounding.

Kentucky is a loaded team that can only beat itself this year. This is the best team in the country right now and this team will only get better as they play more. They are my pick for the 2010 NCAA crown.

Super Bowl Preview – Colts Will Roll

The off week was a quick one as the Pro Bowl – and all the chatter as far as whether the Pro Bowl should in fact be in the week before the Super Bowl or not – distracted attention from the one week off. Now we’re back to business as the Super Bowl is on tap for this week.

New Orleans Saints @ Indianapolis Colts

Super Bowl XLIV Odds: Colts -5.5

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts are ready to lock horns in Super Bowl XLIV and while both teams are very similar, there is one difference that will stand out: experience.

Both the Colts and Saints have very dynamic offenses and both teams rely more so on their attacks than they do their defenses. At the same time, both teams are led by prolific, Hall of Fame-type quarterbacks and both have an excellent set of wide receivers.

But as mentioned, the difference will be experience. The Colts have been at the big dance before and they have left with the hot girl. The Saints have not.

The Colts won the Super Bowl in 2006 where as this will be the first Super Bowl for the Saints in franchise history. That’s going to be a big difference when the bright lights start to shine as the Colts will know what to expect while the Saints may need some time to adjust to the pressure.

Pick: Colts -5.5

Mavericks vs Suns Betting Odds – Dallas to Take Season Series

For everyone watching the Super Bowl XLIV odds and waiting for next week’s game, pause to watch a matchup between two former NBA MVPs in Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. Winners of four of their last five games, the Dallas Mavericks meet a team going the opposite way when it faces the Suns, in Phoenix. Having lost seven of the last nine games, Nash and company are looking to turn things around at home before heading out on a four game road trip.

What: NBA Betting

When: Thursday January 28th – 10:30pm EST

Where: US Airways Center - Phoenix, AZ

Key Stat:  Suns are 17-6 at home while the Mavericks are 16-8 on the road.

The Storyline - Mavericks vs Suns betting odds breakdown
Leading the season series by winning their only matchup of the season in December, the Mavericks can take the series with a win on the road.  This will be the sixth game away from the big D in seven games for the Mavericks who can gain some ground on idle Denver in the race for second in the Western Conference. The key to the game will be which team can bend the game to match their playing style.

Offensive Matchups - Mavericks vs Suns betting odds breakdown

The Suns are going to put up points as they average 113 points a game at home thanks to their run and gun offence, and shooting a league best 41 percent from downtown. Their problem as of late has been fourth quarter scoring.  For a team that scores at a pace of 27 points a quarter, they have averaged just 18 points in their last three losses. Sophomore guard Goran Dragic has stepped up in the past three games, averaging 21 points including 32 on Monday, and is one of the better sleeper fantasy projections for the next month.

Scoring almost 10 points a game less than the Suns, Dallas will have to run a bit more than usual, but with athletes like Shawn Marion, Jason Terry and Josh Howard, they are very capable.  Terry has added a boost to the Mavericks offense since being inserted to the starting line-up, scoring 20 plus points in three of four as a starter. Dirk Nowitzki will need to score more than his team high 25 a game if Dallas wants to keep this game close.

Betting Edge: Suns

Defensive Matchups - Mavericks vs Suns betting odds breakdown
Phoenix has never been associated with having a strong defence in the past couple years and that trend is continuing.  Holding the distinction of second worst defence, the Suns are allowing over 107 points per game.  With a fast paced offence it allows for a lot of possessions which will boost the total points in their games.  They just hope to outscore opponents every game.

The Dallas defence has gone under the radar this season. The fourth best shot blocking team, 5.8 per game, is holding opponents to 97 points per game. The Mavericks are also showing discipline by gathering 7.2 steals per game while only committing an average of 19.2 fouls, good for best in the league.

Betting Edge: Mavericks

Notable Injuries - Mavericks vs Suns betting odds breakdown
Suns guard Leandro Barbosa is out for the next month after having a cyst in his right wrist removed. The loss of Barbosa will take 10 points out of the line-up and force Jason Richardson and Dragic to eat up the extra minutes.  Barbosa has only played 29 games this year so the Suns have gotten accustom to playing without him.

Mavericks Center Erik Dampier has been battling a sore knee but he was still on the court for 34 minutes on Tuesday. He is expected to play but in the unlikely instance that he does not, Drew Gooden is a very capable backup who tallied 18 points and 16 rebounds on Sunday in the absence of Dampier

Betting Edge: Mavericks

Betting Prediction - Mavericks vs Suns betting odds breakdown
Phoenix is 4-15 when held to 105 points or less while Dallas is 17-3 when scoring 100 plus points.  This is a good sign for Dallas since the Suns are allowing nearly 108 points a game, while the Mavericks have held opponents under 105 points in nine of their 13 games this month.

CRAIG’s Pick:  Mavericks
